You and your dog are all set for your exciting hike together. You've checked the weather, researched the trail and you're about to step out the door.

But you can't help but think you've forgotten something!

I've got you covered! Below is a complete dog hiking checklist for everything you will need to have a safe and enjoyable hike with your dog!

1. Dog essentials

  • Leash: A sturdy leash is a must-have to keep your pup safe and under control. Consider a hands-free leash for added convenience.
  • Collar with ID tag: Make sure your dog's collar has an up-to-date ID tag containing your contact information, just in case they decide to explore on their own.
  • Harness: For dogs that tend to pull, a harness distributes pressure more evenly.
  • Doggy backpack: If your pup is up for it, a backpack can make them feel like a real trailblazer. Ensure it's balanced and not too heavy.

2. Food and water

  • Water and portable bowl: Keep your furry friend hydrated with enough water for both of you. Collapsible bowls are perfect for saving space.
  • Dog food: If it will be an overnight hike, pack enough of your dog's regular meal. It's also a good idea to pack an extra meal for emergencies.
  • Treats: Bring some tasty treats for those well-deserved rewards along the way.

3. Safety first

  • First aid kit: Be prepared for minor injuries with a pet-specific first aid kit. You can leave it in the car if you can't hike with it.
  • Tick and flea protection: Depending on the area, make sure your dog is protected against ticks and fleas.
  • Doggy sunscreen: Just like us, dogs can get sunburned, especially on their noses. A pet-safe sunscreen is worth considering.

4. Creature comforts

  • Dog bed or mat: After an exciting day of exploring, your pup will appreciate a cozy spot to rest.
  • Towel: Especially for those water-loving puppos.
  • Toys: If you are going to be hiking close to water, you can bring along their favorite waterproof dog toy for added entertainment.

5. Clean up supplies

  • Poop bags: For obvious reasons...
  • Dog-friendly wet wipes: Handy for wiping muddy paws or cleaning your hands.

6. Navigation and communication

  • Trail map: Even if you're familiar with the trail, having a map on hand is wise.
  • Charged phone: Keep your phone fully charged for emergencies, and consider a portable charger.

7. Seasonal considerations

  • Extra layers: In colder months, pack a doggy sweater or jacket if your pup is sensitive to the colder weather.
  • Cooling accessories: For hiking in the summer, a bandana can be soaked with water and attached to your dog to cool them down.

8. Camera or smartphone

  • Capture the memories: Because did you even go hiking with your dog if you didn't take a photo?

Final thoughts

Every dog is unique, so tailor the checklist to your dog's specific needs and preferences. With the right gear and a wagging tail by your side, you're ready to conquer the great outdoors together! Happy trails!
