Light the pumpkin candles, grab the candy and turn on ‘Hocus Pocus 2’… Halloween is finally here! I love all things spooky and get excited when I see the first hints of Halloween in the stores. My favorite part of Halloween is sharing the fun festivities with my best friend… my dog! As much as I love to get swept away in all things spooky, I also make sure I follow these Halloween for dogs safety tips.
Keep the candy out of reach
It wouldn’t be Halloween without bowls of candy lying around. I love to dip my hands into the candy bowl when there are no trick-or-treaters in sight. I make sure to keep the candy bowl up high where wondering paws can’t get to them. Most Halloween candy will make your dog sick, from the ingredients in them, to the wrappers they come in. The pup doesn’t have to miss out on delicious Halloween treats though, they can have their very own Halloween dog treats!
Choose the right dog costumes
Halloween is the time of the year when we can let our hair down and dress up in fun Halloween costumes and our dogs are no different. As much as we love seeing our dogs in their very own Halloween dog costumes, it’s important not to leave them unattended in their costumes. They may try to take it off and get tangled and hurt themselves. If your pup is not the costume type then try these cute Halloween dog bandanas instead.
Decorate wisely
Another Halloween staple are Halloween decorations. It’s important to choose ones that won’t injure your pup. Avoid decorations which have dangling cords or could be potential choking hazards. I use real candles in my Jack-o’-lanterns but I keep these safely outside, away from paws.
Keep your dog away from the front door
Many dogs go missing on or around Halloween each year. The constant door opening to trick-or-treaters and partygoers provides a tempting opportunity for our pups to sneak out and join in on all the hocus pocus! It’s important to keep our dogs calm and away from the overstimulation of sounds and scents which the front door brings on Fright Night!
ID your dog
It’s a good idea to check your dog’s ID tags are on them and the details are up to date in case they do manage to escape and head for the double, double toil and trouble! I have a GPS collar for my dog which gives me great peace of mind!
Keep Skittish dogs calm
Unfortunately, Halloween can be a very scary time for dogs too. Loud fireworks are usually set of around Halloween which can be very traumatic for dogs. Pair that with constant knocking on the door and your pup may have a real struggle on their paws. Luckily, there are lots of items that can help you keep your dog calm around this time such as diffusers and treats. In addition to this, CBD is also used for a dog’s anxiety.
