It seems like everyone you speak to nowadays has their dog on a raw dog food diet. I started looking into feeding my dog a raw food diet after I met an older-looking boarder collie who had the energy of a puppy. I asked the owner the age of the pup and was surprised to learn this beautiful dog was 14 years old! I asked the owner what his secret was and he told me …. raw dog food diet.

I have a 65lb wolf-dog hybrid and quickly learned that feeding him a raw food diet would burn a huge hole in my pocket each month. As much as we want to give our 4-legged friends the world, sometimes we quite literally can’t!

So, I set about finding the best alternative which was also friendly on the bank account! Below you can find my tips on feeding raw food diet for dogs…on a budget!

Kibble

Kibble is very much the staple of my dog’s diet and the most affordable way to feed him. I knew I would have to start here. I researched the highest meat protein content kibble on the market and introduced this into his diet, being careful to slowly switch out the old for the new.

I was surprised to find that many kibble brands say their kibble contains high protein content. But when you look closer, the protein is plant-based and not animal-based. To get closer to the “raw food diet” I wanted to find the highest animal protein kibble and stumbled across the dog food brand Farmina. Farmina uses 90% animal protein in their kibble and is the closet kibble I could find to raw food diet for dogs. I highly recommend this brand.

Eggs

Back in the day when dogs were hunter-gatherers, they would steal eggs out of birds’ nests and eat them raw. Eggs are a wonderful way to introduce protein, healthy fatty acids and vitamins into your dog’s diet without breaking the bank.

Fish oil

Fish oil is a great supplement to add to your dog’s diet. It supports their heart health, relieves allergies and joint pain and promotes a silky coat. Best of all it gives a delicious fishy taste to your companion’s meal.

Final thoughts

And that’s it! High-end kibble, eggs and fish oil! It is highly recommended you speak to your vet before changing your dog’s diet because each of our pets have different needs!
