As pet parents, our top priority is keeping our dogs healthy and clean. But when it comes to washing them, how often should you wash your dog?

As a general rule of thumb, dogs should typically be washed once every 3 months. However, this does change depending on the coat type and age of the dog. In this blog post, we will explore the different washing schedules and provide some helpful tips on how to keep your pup squeaky clean.

How often should you bathe a dog?

The short answer is dogs should be washed once every 3 months. However, you may need to increase the frequency depending on your dog’s lifestyle, skin type, and coat type.

Dogs with thicker, longer coats that tend to mat or hold dirt, like Golden Retrievers or German Shepards, may require a bath more often than dogs with shorter coats, like Beagles or Dachshunds.

If your dog has sensitive skin, they may need to be bathed more frequently than once every 3 months. This is so you can remove and wash away the allergens from their coat that causes the itchy skin. Be sure to choose the right dog shampoo for itchy skin. There are lots of options available which can help soothe your dog’s irritated skin.

Dogs that love to roll in poop will also be washed more frequently than dogs who don’t spend much time outside. My dog rolls in smelly things quite often so I focus on washing the one area on his body that is stinky. This is usually on the cheek and chest area. I avoid washing his whole body each time he rolls in something smelly to avoid stripping his coat of natural oils.

Overwashing your dog

As much as we want to keep our dogs clean and healthy, washing them too often can lead to problems. Overwashing your dog can lead to dry, irritated skin and can strip the coat of its natural oils, leading to dull or brittle hair. If you need to wash your dog more often than once every three months, make sure you use a shampoo with gentle and natural ingredients.

Tips for doggy bath times

When giving your dog a bath, it’s essential to use the right products and techniques to avoid any problems. Start by brushing your dog’s coat to remove any dead hair and debris, and rinse them thoroughly before applying the shampoo.

Use lukewarm water to avoid causing any discomfort, and make sure that you rinse off all of the shampoo and conditioner completely. After the bath, dry your dog off with a towel and give them a good brush-through to prevent any matting.

Final thoughts

The frequency at which dogs should be washed depends on their breed, age, and lifestyle. Most dogs only need a bath every three months or so, but if your dog gets dirty or smelly before then, it’s time for a wash.

When giving your dog a bath, make sure to use gentle products and lukewarm water, and always brush their coat thoroughly before and after. Keeping your dog clean and healthy is a vital part of pet ownership, and by following these tips, you’ll be sure to keep your furry friend looking and feeling their best.
